Brit Acc

“Pare, ang hirap talaga minsan intindihin ng boss natin. Hirap ng accent nila,” Roger complained. Our boss is British.
“Ayan! Manood ka kasi ng Harry Potter para masanay ka! Twilight ka kasi ng Twilight eh.”

Peripheral Roger

I called up Roger, my Filipino colleague, “Pare, tara! Kain na tayo.”
“Sige, sunod na ako.”
I was reading the paper when I saw him enter the pantry in my peripheral vision. Shocked by the news, I told him, “Pre, patay na pala si Britanny Murphy?”
I heard him say, “Huh!?”
I looked up, it wasn’t him. It was Faisal Khan, my Pakistani colleague, “I didn’t get you. I only understood ‘Murphy’.”
I apologized and explained it to him, “I thought you were Roger.”

When Roger came to the pantry, Faisal told him, “Roger, Britanny Murphy is dead.”

New Moon Fan

Roger, my colleague, saw New Moon in Manila so when he came back he was so excited to share the story to me and Zinnia, “Ganda, pare!”
“Panget daw eh,” we told him.
“Hindi! Ayus lang. Ganun pala mga vampire…” he started. We assumed he’ll tell us about the ways and means of vampires.
Before he could even finish, we cut him off, “Pare, ‘ganun pala mga vampire?‘ Baka nalilimutan mo pelikula lang ‘yun.”
He laughed, “Oo nga pala.”

Notebook Request 1

Samsam

After sharing this discussion with Roger and Zinnia, my office-mates, Roger told me, “Oh! Bilhan mo na!”
“Anong bilhan mo na? Ang yaman ko naman?” I asked sarcastically.
“Ilang taon na ba ‘yung pamangkin mo?” asked Roger.
“Grade 5.”
“Ay! Grade 5 lang pala. Akala ko naman college na,” Roger realized, “Saan n’ya naman gagamitin ‘yun?”
“Pare obvious naman kung saan.”
“Facebook?”
“Hindi!” I answered doing a Vice Ganda sarcasm, “Powerpoint presentation.”

Overspeeding Roger

I was curious whether all cars in UAE have a maximum speed limit monitor installed in their vehicles. So when I first hitched on Roger’s new car, I had to ask him, “Pare, eto bang kotse mo may speed limit monitor din?”
“Yung nag-bee-beep kapag nag overspeed ka?” he asked.
“Oo, yun nga.”
“Lahat ng kotse, pare, meron nun. Required ata ng UAE.”
I jokingly dared him, “Sige nga! Try nga natin ‘tong sa kotse mo?”
“Sige!”

Reader’s Digest Winner

I received a text message this morning from Jonjon from the Philippines: Kuya, may sinalihan ka ba sa Reader’s Digest? Nanay apparently asked Jonjon to text me for the Snail Mail they received.

“Sino ba naman ang ‘di mapapa-long distance nun, ‘di ba?” I told Zinnia and Roger, “Pagkatawag ko, sulat daw na may kasama pang susi ng kotse, saka chance to win 6 Million Pesos!”
Zinnia later told me, “Orlee, 5 years old palang ako ganyan na ang promo ng Reader’s Digest. Kunyari nanalo ka. Pero scam ‘yan. Naniwala ka naman.”
Roger snickered on the side, “Naniwala ka naman.”

What a waste of time and long distance call!

Roger’s Caramel Bars

Roger brought Caramel Bars from Max’s yesterday. His wife brought it from Manila. It was due for expiry on that day so he told us, “Ubusin na natin. Mag-e-expire na ‘to hangang alas-otso ngayon.”
Alas-otso?  Time difference between Manila and Dubai is 4 hours.

Zingaw

“Ang lungkot talaga!” I told Zinnia and Roger during our lunch kwentuhan.
“Paano na ako, Orlee? Eh madali pa naman akong ma-homesick.” Zinnia said. She’ll be going home to the Philippines on 9th.
“Naaalala ko kasi mga pamangkin ko, mga kapatid ko, nanay at tatay ko saka si Denice,” I told them, “Buti ka pa, pare, darating pamilya mo, di ka na malungkot,” I told Roger.
“Zinnia, di ka naman malulungkot kasi wala ka namang pamilya,” Roger told Zinnia.
Zinnia stopped and looked at Roger, “Ano ako singaw? Wala ba akong magulang at kapatid?”

Counting Down

Before going home, I used to count the days down and brag it to my colleagues:
Zinnia, next month ganitong petsa, nasa bahay ako kumakain ng sopas na luto ni Tatay.
Sanay, 10 more days and I’ll be in the Philippines.
Roger, 3 linggo na lang pauwi na ako.

I even counted down the days everyday and brag it to my office friends.

This afternoon though, I received a text message from Sanay:
Hey!! 12 more days to go and your back to Dubai! Hee…Hee.. I know it sounds killing but dude that’s the truth! I and Zinnia are keeping track ot it!

Piging

Everytime we talk to each other, Zinnia, Roger and I, try our best to speak in really deep Tagalog, for “Kamusta?”, “Kain na tayo” and other basic Tagalog words are now understood by our Indian friends. Thanks to us: We created our own monsters!

So instead of saying Kamusta? to our Filipino friends on the phone we tend to say, “Anong mga pangyayari? Abala ka ba sa trabaho?” as to not denote that we’re wasting precious office hours talking on the phone. Hey! They do it too.

Yesterday when our boss went out for a meeting, I told Zinnia, “Z, piging na! Wala ang amo,” so that our Indian friends wouldn’t understand what we were talking about. May pulong sila.
