Anong Floor Po

420709_121476248052255_496249314_nI was skyping with my mom (she’s in Japan!) this morning when she decided to show me my sisters apartment in Yokohama.
“Yan ang bubong,” she told me while showing me the ceiling.
“Eto ang kusina.”
“Nay anong floor ho?” I was trying to ask her which level does my sister live in. It’s a condominium west of Tokyo.
“Eto ang floor,” she showed me. It’s parquet btw.
“Second floor!” Aki screamed.
“Yown ang tanong ko. Salamat Aki,” I answered.

Aki’s Sensei

Aki’s Sensei (teacher) had a question, the answer was nine. So Aki answered, “Nine,” in English.
She then realized her language error and corrected herself, “Oh! Kyuu!”
Her Sensei knew that she cannot deny the fact that Aki can speak three languages so she answered in Japanese, “It’s ok, Aki, you already know that in English so you can answer in English. In the future, just remember… I can only understand until ‘ten’.”

Aki on Unicycle

“Nay, san galing yung unicycle ni Aki?” I asked my mom today after seeing Aki’s photo on Facebook.

“Galing Japan yun! Padala ng mama nya,” Nanay answered.
“Magaling nga sya eh.” I commented.
“Sabi nga ng Tatay mo kay Aki: Naghihirap na mama mo, magpapadala ng bike iisa ang gulong. Tapos wala pang manibela.”
“Oo nga naman,” I answered, “Sabi ko nga sa mga kaibigan ko dito may sa-Perya ang pamilya natin eh.”

Small Sensei

Since Paula is now studying Japanese, which Aki is already very fluent in, she asks her little cousin for help.
So whenever there’s an assignment, the 17 year old asks the 8 year old, “Aki, tara na. Gagawin na natin yung assignment ko.”

Miggy’s Japan

“Miggy, kamusta Japan?” I asked my nephew.
“Malamig!”
“May aircon?”
“Wala,” he answered, “Dito na lang ako forever and ever and ever…”
“Why?”
“May lindol na… may tornado pa.”

Chinese vs Japanese Knowledge

Doubting his ability to speak any real Chinese, I asked Atong, “Siguro mas marami pa akong alam na Japanese word kesa sa alam mong Chinese word.”
We then asked Ronald to say common words and Atong will tell the Chinese translation while I, the Japanese translation.

Ronald said, “O sige, puno.”
Atong answered, “Pun-no.”
I answered, “Cherry blossom.”

“Sapatos!”
Chinese, “Sup-pa-tos.”
Japanese, “Ot-to.”

“Make up!” Ronald asked us.
“Shisheido,” I answered because, “Mayberine” didn’t work.
Atong answered with, “Ly-na at Chin-chan-su.”

“Madadaya naman kayo eh!” Ronald screamed.

World Record Breaking Flight

Before she could even land in Narita Airport Ate Richie, among other passengers, learned that a strong earthquake shook Japan. Their flight was diverted to two other airports before they could finally land back in Narita.
After staying for more than 31 hours inside the Delta Flight, the flight attendant announced, “With 31 hours together, I think we are more than a family here.”

“Yun na ang pinakamahaba kong flight sa buong buhay ko. Wala nang tatalo ‘dun. 31 hours,” she told me this morning.
I then told my friends, “Okay na rin ‘yun kesa 127 hours.”

Japan Welcomes Richie

Being a Filipino that finds humor on a tragedy, my eldest sister, Ate Pam, told the first-time visitor Ate Richie, “Special ka talaga, Chie! Buong Japan niyanig sa pagdating mo.”

My Japan Confession

I was due for a short vacation in Japan two years back. I’ve booked the ticket through an agency so when I received the ticket I didn’t check the details.
In NAIA, though I know where to check-in and though it was my first time to fly alone, I decided to ask the airport guard, “Boss, dito ba ‘tong flight na ‘to?” showing him my e-ticket.
“Ay, sir,” scratching his head, “Tignan n’yong maigi oh. Bukas pa ho ‘yang flight na ‘yan.”
I immediately called nanay who saw me off, “Nay! Bumalik kayo! Bukas pa ang flight!”

All the efforts of preparing for that flight. Gone! I already told my friends that I’ll be gone that day. Shame! Shame! Shame!
I immediately called ate Pam, my pick up in Japan, “Ate, bukas pa ang flight ko. Mali ang agency!” and did not leave the house that day. Ang alam nila nasa Japan na ako.

The next morning, I was excited again! Japan! Here I come!
“Sir, we’re really sorry, delayed po ang flight today. All passengers will be checked in a hotel or you may opt to choose to go back home and we’ll provide you Php 500.00 for the inconvenience,” said the ground steward on my 2nd attempt to go to Japan.
“Haaaaahhhhhh!?!?!?!?!?!? Babalik nanaman kami????” screamed Nanay, “Oh James (driver), ‘di nanaman tuloy ‘yung flight,” they will pick me up again from NAIA.
I called up Japan again, “Ate, hindi nanaman tuloy. Bukas pa.”
“Ano ba ‘yan!?” Ate Pam, shocked, again, “Excited na kami sa’yo.”
“Eh paano pa ako?”

On my third attempt, nanay told me, “Hindi na kita ihahatid, si James na lang, napapagod na akong maghatid araw-araw. Baka matuloy ka na kapag ‘di kita ihatid,” and I arrived in Japan that day. At last, nakarating din sa Japan. Ang alam ng friends ko three days na ako sa Japan.
