TBT #8: Cracking Gab

It has been years since I last played this game:

smokers-partyMy Dubai gang decided to go to Madinat Jumeirah last Friday Night. It’s like Trinoma but near the beach. It’s like Ayala Alabang but with more diverse culture. It’s like Bonifacio High, less the jologs outsiders.
So anyway, we decided to play the (actually, I initiated it) HOY PARE KAMUSTA Game. It’s just a stupid game that I used to play back in my days in the Philippines. The basic rule of the game is to pretend as if you just saw your friends in a long time and needed catching up:

Orlee: Hoy! Pare! Kamusta?
Julius: Hoy! Orlee! Kamusta? Sino kasama mo?
Orlee: Ako lang. Kanina ka pa dito? Kakadating ko lang eh. What a small world! Ano bibilhin mo?
Julius: Walang lang magawa sa bahay eh. Kamusta tropa?

So that’s how you play it. You really have to have a straight face on playing it and the first one who cracks up is the loser.
So anyway, Gab, can’t handle the pretentions so everytime I approach them as if seeing them for the first time, he immediately cracks up, “Pare, ‘di ko kaya para kayong mga gago. Natatawa ako.”
Everytime we see each other as if on the first time, Gab would always walk away from us, move to the corner and laugh his ass off.
There was this one time that Gab departed from the group and when he came back before I could say anything he said, “Ayoko! Ayoko pare, natatawa ako.”
I asked him, “Pare, wala pa akong sinasabi… Defensive ka na!”

When my friends and I decided to hang out one weekend night, we all roamed around Al-Ghurair City, one mall here in Dubai. It was getting late but we have decided to just do our window shopping round the mall because no one wants to direct everyone in a coffee shop.
“Ano? kape tayo?” asked Ronald.
“Oy! Nagyayakag si Ronald,” screamed Gab. Gab was quoting our group’s rule: Whoever asks for it has to treat. It being a fancy resto, hang out in a coffee shop or do any unusual stuff.
“Hindi! Hindi! Huwag na.” Ronald screamed.
I answered, “Shuhada! Ayaw magyakag pero ayaw maghiwa-hiwalay.”

FIFA World Cup Question

Stating the obvious Ronald asked, “Sino ‘yung takbo ng takbo na iba ang kulay?” while watching the FIFA World Cup 2010.
He didn’t know that these were referees.
Gab answered, “Taga-punas ‘yun ng pawis.”

Surprise Homecoming

Bing just came back from a surprise one week homecoming. Her kids were shocked and happy at the same time.
Gab, ang saya mag-surprise!” she told Gab. Gab tried it but his father-in-law had a slip of a tongue; hence, Ingrid, his wife, was prepared for his big ‘surprise’ last year.
Ronald also did this to surprise his ex wife, during her birthday.

I am amazed at how these people could pull a surprise homecoming off so I told them, “Ma-try nga rin ‘yang surprise-surprise na ‘yan,” then I told Jules, “Best! Try mo yan kay Ann. Surpresahin mo sya: Ann, nasa Pinas na ako!”
Gab laughed and said, “Nasa Dubai kaya si Ann!”
“Kaya nga,” I answered, “Siguradong ma-su-surprise ‘yun kapag bigla-biglang nasa Pilipinas na si Julius!”

Here in Dubai, it’s a must to haggle for a lower price, even if you’re inside the mall. Unfortunately, I’m still not confident enough to do it. Good thing my friend and roommate is good at it.
Since my Tissot watch (Wow! Tissot!) stopped working and needed a battery replacement, I asked Ronald, “Bet, tawaran mo.”
While he was doing his price haggling, I told Gab who was with us, “Di kasi kapani-paniwala kapag ako nag tumawad.”
Ronald overheard and screamed, “Sige! Akin nalang ang natawad ko!”
“Huwag naman! Joke lang!” I begged.
