Obama Smile

SmilobamaI showed Ronald the “Amazingly Consistent Smile of Obama Video” thru this website.
After seeing the video, he commented, “Bakit naman nila ginaganoon si Obama? Eh sa ganun lang talaga s’ya ngumiti?”
That’s when I realized that I was sharing a video with the wrong person. I forgot that he is Mr. Perpetual Smile.

Rain or Shine

Debbie, our Filipina HR (ets-ar), called me upon hearing the conditions in the Philippines…

“Orlee? Kamusta ang lugar n’yo?”
“Ok naman family ko sa Cavite. Ikaw Deb?”
“Malayong malayo ang lugar namin sa Mindanao,” she replied, “Si Zinnia kaya?” Zinnia is currently on her annual vacation and is in the Philippines now until 12th October. She hails from Navotas – part of the Philippine Waterworld of Camanava.
“Ang balita ko, Deb, kahit flood prone area sila, amazingly nakaligtas daw ang bahay nila. 2 blocks away daw mataas ang baha.”
“Talaga!? Diyos ko. Buti na lang. Napakasaklap naman na sabay pa sa bakasyon ni Zinnia ano?” Deb commented.
“Oo nga eh. Pero todo pa rin ang bakasyon n’ya – Galing s’ya sa Cagayan Valley nung isang linggo tapos this weekend balita ko ata eh Camiguin or Palawan,” I shared to Debbie. Zinnia has been updating me on her facebook shoutouts.
“Aba!” Debbie was caught surprised, “Bakasyong bonggang-bongga pa rin si Zinnia.”

Willie is Back

After a month of absence, Willie Revillame is back in Wowowee.

Imagine this:
Ondoy’s flood victims shown on the side of the screen during Willie’s first week back in his show. He screams, “Ano ba ‘yan! Tanggalin n’yo ‘yan! Nag-sasaya tayo dito tapos pinapakita n’yo ‘yan! Ano? Mamili kayo? Ako o yan na lang?”

And he’s suspended again for another month. Nice!

National Anthem Deja Vu

cvcSomeone auditioned in the choir last week. It was a friend of a friend so we were confident that he has a background in choir singing.
Kuya Jun, the conductor, asked him, “Oh sige kantahnin mo nga ‘to…” while fingering the piano. It was the last bars of the Philippine National Anthem.
My choirmates commented, “Christian Bautista, ikaw ba ‘yan?”

Middle Eastern Air Freshener

Sometimes my friends and I talk to the Dubai Taxi drivers…
“Salaam Alaikum!”, “Good morning, my friend!”

At times, this would also test if the driver has  bad breath.

One time, when Ronald continued talking to a really estero-smelling-bad-breath of one taxi driver about the directions and how his day was, I really wasn’t able to stop myself and told Ronald, “HUWAG MO NA KASING KAUSAPIN! BUMABAHO ANG BUONG TAXI!”

Job Description

In the choir we’re discussing various topics when we arrived on the topic of our different job posts.
“Maganda nga trabaho nila eh,” someone from my choir told me about Tina, Nike and Celso‘s work.
“Ano ba work nila?”
“Mga laging naka-nganga.”
“Ano ‘yun?” I asked them.
“Mga engineer. Nakatingala kasi sila lagi.”
“Oo nga naman.”

Try n’yo tumingala ng matagal ng hindi naka-nganga. Nakakastress.

Nakaahon sa Kahirapan

Some cast of The Library Comedy Bar were invited from the Philippines to work for a few months here in Dubai.

Some of my friends attended the first night and one good punchline was when the hosts saw a Filipina and her foreigner husband:
“Mga kababayan, magpalakpakan po tayo. May isang pamilya nanaman ang nakaahon sa kahirapan!”

Smoker’s Cough

During our Eid Trip to Jumeirah Beach, I asked Chastine, “Nag-s-smoke ka?”
“Hindi na,” she answered.
“Good for you! What made you stop?”
“Nagkaroon ako ng accute bronchitis.”
“Ano ‘yun?” I followed up. By this time, Jade, Gab, MJ, Antonette, Ann and Jules were all ears. All of them smokers.
“Magkakaroon na ako ng smoker’s cough,” Chastine answered.
“Ano ‘yun?”
“Uubo ka na lang bigla kasi ‘yung phlem mo ‘di mo na kontrolado. Out of nowhere uubo ka na lang.”

“Ayan!” Look at your future…” pointed to Chastine then I faked a cough while telling all of my smoker friends.
“Good!” Gab commented, “Wag ka naman manakot!”
“Mas masama kaya ang second-hand smoke!” Someone commented.
I insisted, “Ang saya ‘di ba? Wala lang… Bigla ka nalang uubo… Habang buhay.”

Burj Dubai Directions

Buj Dubai is the highest building not only in Dubai but also in the world. It was due to open this month but it was moved to December due to time constraints. It’s not yet finished and they are still building it up!

One bad example of giving direction in Dubai:
“Saan ka na?”
“Malapit na ako. Tanaw ko na ang Burj Dubai.”
“Hello? Tanaw naman ang Burj Dubai hangang Sharjah?”
